Ruswarp was the collie dog belonging to Graham Nuttall, first secretary of the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line. Graham Nuttall and Ruswarp were inseparable. On 20th January 1990 they went walking in the hills, but failed to return. Graham’s body was found on 7th April. His faithful dog Ruswarp had stayed with him for 11 winter weeks.
On Saturday 11th April 2009, the 20th anniversary of the reprieve of the Settle-Carlisle Line from closure, the bronze statue of Ruswarp was jointly unveiled at Garsdale station by two people closely connected with the events of 20 years ago: Mrs Olive Clarke, who chaired the public enquiries that took place in the North West of the country and Ron Cotton, at the time a senior British Rail manager who had the unenviable task of closing the Settle-Carlisle Railway.
